Harry Dodge, who is currently working at a croquet club in Florida, competed in the inaugural US GC Open last week. The event took place at the National Croquet Centre, West Palm Beach. The top 32 players entering the tournament gained a place based on their D grade.
The day before the main tournament started Harry played in the Pro Am doubles with his playing partner Tane Russack. They won 4 of their 5 doubles matches to finish in second place behind Matthew Essick (2022 GC world champion) and his partner Bev Cardo.
The main tournament consisted of four all play all blocks. Harry won 4 of his 7 games to finish in 2nd place behind the group winner Matthew Essick who was unbeaten. The top four in each of the four blocks gained a place in the Championship knockout round of 16. In this round Harry lost his match against Malcolm Fletcher of Australia. Malcolm went on to reach the Championship final in which he played his brother Robert Fletcher, current world no.1, losing 3-7,4-7,5-7.
Harry therefore went into the Bowl knockout competition. In this he first played Brian Lozano from Mexico who had reached the Q/F stage of the World Championships last October. Harry won this match 7-2, 7-5. In the Bowl S/F Harry was successful against the world No.3 Edmund Fordyce of New Zealand, winning 7-4, 2-7, 7-3. This gained him a place in the Bowl final against fellow Brit Euan Burridge. Euan had a very successful World Championships, reaching the semi-final where he was beaten by Robert Fletcher. After a close match Euan won the Bowl final 4-7, 7-5, 7-5.
