“Bath Buns” Triumph at Nailsea Short Croquet
It was buns all round for our team last Saturday at the two-day SWF Short Croquet tournament at Nailsea. The team of Pete Miles, Bob Hart, Lynne Passfield and Tony Jackson playing in Division 4, got off to a perfect start winning all four games against Budleigh Salterton. As the day progressed, Pete and Lynne continued to make serene progress against opposition from Taunton Deane and Bristol, whist Tony and Bob each suffered a frustrating golden hoop loss. After 3 rounds, we had won 10 of 12 games, and were level with our final opponents, Glamorgan.
Glamorgan were fielding the strongest team in the Division: Chris Williams (3P), Paul Pristavec (2P), Robert Upton(1P) and Kevin Ham (1). Victory for either team would give promotion to Division 3. Sharing the wins would mean the dreaded peg shootout. Lynne set the standard, using her bisques wisely to get an early win against Robert. Pete and Tony kept clear heads and their wins against Chris and Kevin meant that Bath had won the Division. Meanwhile Bob, true to form, had wasted his bisques and was 11-7 behind against Paul who needed one more peel. Bob finally got the scores level before getting a golden hoop to win 12-11 and complete the clean sheet.
Smiles all round as shown in the photos.
