Final B League Match of Season
Weston SM brought a team of players all of whom played off the minimum permitted 16 handicap. Our team of Mike Henebury (20), Sue Duncan (22) and 1st timer Andy Wagstaff (24) was clearly at a disadvantage on experience but gave an excellent account.
The headline result was a 3-2 loss. In the AM we lost the doubles (Mike + Andy) and Sue her singles match. The doubles went to golden hoop – Mike played exceptionally well, reaching rover with his ball and setting up a lovely leave. Unfortunately, Weston next turn scored the golden hoop and went on to gain an extra 3 hoops. So 0-2 behind at lunch.
In the afternoon Mike played steadily but lost 6 – 14 to the Weston captain. Sue managed to reach peg with one of her balls and won 18 – 15.
Andy played a stunning game in the afternoon and eventually prevailed 18 – 14, a great initial victory in Andy’s 1st match for Bath.
The SWF B League South division was unfortunately reduced to just two teams playing home and away following the early season withdrawal of Wellington. Having each won at the others lawns the two clubs finished joint top of the B League South Division equal on matches won and also on games won. The overall league result was therefore calculated on average nett hoop points per game which resulted in WSM finishing in first place and progressing to the final against North division winners Bristol.
