Success in Short Croquet (Restricted) Final

September 30th 2024

The last of the SWF League Finals was held on Sunday 29th September, and Bath were once again featured – for the third time in a week! Our Short Croquet (Restricted) team had won the North division and were hosting Camerton & Peasedown, as South division winners, at the Rec.

Though Camerton had considerably more bisques than we did, on paper we looked the stronger and more experienced side, with Philip de Glanville, Lynne Passfield, Tony Jackson and Peter Hall all keen to win the trophy for the third time, and on home turf.

However Camerton put in a very strong performance and the outcome remained uncertain until right at the end of the final game, despite an inspiring display of short croquet from Tony who scored four wins, three of which he pegged out. He has been an SC6 for years but, having got down to SC5 just last week, he is now very nearly an SC4! Philip also had quite a good day, with three wins, the last of which was somewhat of a nail-biter watched nervously by all the other players; after time was called he pegged out his opponent’s forward ball with a ‘grievous’ but therefore failed to peg out his own, leaving three balls on the lawn for his opponent’s final turn. Fortunately for us the latter broke down after running just one more hoop, and Bath thus won 9:7, and celebrated with a splendid tea in the Clubhouse.
