Late Fightback by GC Level Team against Cheltenham
The GC Level team entertained a strong Cheltenham team at the Rec on 29 July. Harry Dodge was playing his first competitive match since last year and won all four of his singles games. The highlight was a tremendous hard fought tussle between Harry (-4) and Sam Cuthbert (-2) which Harry won 7-5. The morning session went in Cheltenham’s favour 6-4 and they pulled away further in the first afternoon round to lead 9-5 with just four singles and two doubles games remaining. Harry, Neil Pinker and Tony Curson won three of the four singles in round five to reduce the deficit to two. In the last round of doubles Tony & Neil comfortably won their game 7-3. It was all down to the last doubles with Harry playing with Sally Helvey. This game was drawn at 5-5 when time was called and two extra shots per ball then commenced. On the 7th extra ball Sally ran the hoop for a 6-5 lead. With the last shot of the game Cheltenham’s Ivor Brand shot for hoop 12 from adjacent to hoop 11 and hit the hoop 12 upright to give Bath the game and an overall 10-10 draw. Bath’s team was completed by Anwen Owens who also contributed to the overall score. Sally also reduced her GC handicap to 4 at the end of the day.
