National GC B Level Series Tournament at Bath
Bath held a round of the National GC B Level Series on 14 July. The sixteen competitors, including some from as far a field as Durham,Worcester and Colchester experienced the best weather of the year so far in Bath. In the first two rounds Richard Peperell, Caroline Denny, Susan Way-Vautier and Andrew Carpenter looked to be the likely winners. Susan had a tough opening game against Janet Trueman finally winning 7-6. In round 3 Richard Peperell came from 4-6 down to defeat Andrew Carpenter 7-6. This was probably the defining game for these two players with Richard’s confidence greatly boosted and Andrew deflated by Richard’s comeback. Caroline’s game against Susan was also a pivotal point with Susan triumphing 7-5. Caroline’s chances of a tournament victory were finally ended in round 4 when Marian Manning, on a good sequence of wins, defeated her 7-4. Unfortunately, Marian’s run of wins was stopped in round 5 by her husband Michael 7-5; let’s hope the journey home to Colchester was peaceful! So the final round resulted in Richard Peperell playing Susan Way–Vautier for first place. The preciseness of Richard’s shots and tactical play were deciding factors on this occasion and he eased to a 7-2 win and so maintain a 100% record for the day. Five players shared four wins from the six rounds, the aforementioned Marian, Michael and Susan plus the debutant at this level Philip De Glanville (Bath) and Brian McCausland (Nailsea). Nigel Dawson Cocks also took part in his first National tournament winning a creditable 3 out of six games.
Many thanks from the manager (Paul francis) to Bath Members –Rosemary Beesley, Miriam Bolger, Norman Connor, Tony Curson and Sue Hoskins for their sterling work.
