Bath Tame the Bear
Bath’s Federation League team tackled the Bear of Rodborough in a blustery home match on Saturday 16 June. Captain Peter Miles dismissed Brian Pittaway in a one-sided singles game in the morning. Roger Hayes & Andrew Willis struggled in a long drawn out doubles game, which ended with the visitors’ Tim Blades and Richard Way sneaking home by 2 pts to make the score 1-1 at lunchtime.
Bath mastered the difficult conditions better than the Bear in the afternoon singles games as the wind strength increased, taking early leads in all three matches, despite giving big handicap advantages to the Bear. Blades failed in his attempt to peg out Miles, who in turn pegged him out which effectively ended further resistance. Hayes steadily destroyed his opponent Pittaway in another one-sided game. Willis was pegged out by Way but recovered well to complete an excellent 3-ball break to win in the final match. A clean sweep in the afternoon singles gave Bath a good 4-1 home win.
