Short Croquet (Restricted) Team reach Final

July 22nd 2024

The Bath Short Croquet (restricted) team went to Kington Langley for their return match – the last of four in the N division. After last week’s heat it was blessedly cool and damp on their nice flat half lawns, and we greatly admired their brand new Clubhouse, which was very much lighter and airier than its predecessor, though still without electricity.

We had won comfortably when the Kington Langley team came to Bath in May, but they had ‘beefed’ it up on this occasion and the games were more closely fought. At lunch the score was four all, and the afternoon continued in much the same vein, ending finally with a well-earned draw. Lynne Passfield (now an SC3) and Tony Jackson (still an SC6) both won two games, while George Plumly, who is proving to be really useful at Short Croquet, continued his recent run of form with another three wins, making up for our captain Philip de Glanville’s poor showing against generous hoops and multitudinous bisques. The latter’s only success was a decent win against another SC2.5 at the end of the day.

Eight-all seemed a fair and satisfactory result to all of us, and does secure Bath’s position at the top of the North division league table. This means that we shall definitely be playing in the SC (R) Final, against the winner of the Southern division, which we happen to be hosting at the Club on Sunday 29th September.
